Location: Embonas

Attaviros is the tallest mountain in Rhodes, rising at 1215 meters. A popular spot with hiking lovers, reaching the top of the mountain can be very tricky. Tarmac roads and winding dirt tracks will lead you from the nearby village of Embonas to the mountaintop in what is probably gonna be a 2-3 hour expedition. It is all gonna be well worth it, however, as you reach the summit and are greeted by a remarkable view, as well as the remnants of the Temple of Attaviros Zeus.

The Temple of Attaviros Zeus dates back to the Mycenaean period. According to Greek mythology, this place of worship was built by Althaemenes, a descendant of the Cretan King Minos. He was said to have chosen Attaviros Mountain as the site for this temple as it was the only point in Rhodes from which his homeland of Crete could be seen. It was also believed that because of its height, it was the closest spot to the Gods on the island.

Today the temple lies in ruin, its stone foundation being the main thing that is left, along with an area that may have once been a basement. Visitors can gaze upon the vestiges of this once greatly important altar, while also taking in the serene atmosphere and panoramic view of the island.
