In the location of Kato Petres, at the foot of Monte Smith, visitors will find a tiny cave chapel tucked away between the rocky hillslopes. Dedicated to the Archangel Michael Panormitis, this atmospheric and highly reverential chapel has been put up inside a natural cave and is of great significance to many of the Rhodians, who come here to pray to the saint and light a candle or leave a votive offering.
The history of the Cave of the Archangel Michael Panormitis started when one of the locals found an icon of the archangel floating on the sea as he was strolling there on the saint’s feast day. Considering the event a divine sign, he decided to create this quaint chapel, adorning an adjacent cave with icons and candles, so that the people of Rhodes could go and pray there.
Ever since, a staircase has been fashioned among the rocks as well, facilitating access to the cave chapel. The surrounding area is remarkably well-kept too, and regales visitors with stunning views, especially in the late evening, when the sea and the sky are dyed in an explosion of flaming hues.
To get there from Rhodes Town, all you have to do is follow the coastal road in the direction of Monte Smith.
