Rhodes Archaeological Museum

Location: Town
Don't miss: Museums guide (free admission dates and other useful info)

The Archaeological Museum is located in the Old Town section of Rhodes Town. It is housed in the Medieval building of the Hospital of the Knights, in the Palace of the Grand Master. The construction of this building began in 1440 by Grand Master de Lastic and it was completed in 1489 by Grand Master d'Aubusson. The building was renovated in the early 20th century by the Italians, as was the rest of the Medieval Town of Rhodes.

Today the Archaeological Museum contains findings from excavations of the Italian occupation that took place all over the island as well as some small islets of the Dodecanese. Visitors can see a collection of vases, figurines, small objects and tomb groups found in Ancient Ialyssos and Ancient Kameiros that date from the Geometric up until the Roman times. There are also mosaic floors from the Hellenistic times and funerary slabs of the Knights of Saint John.

The Exhibition

One of the most notable exhibits of the Museum is the Marble Statue of Aphrodite Bathing, dating to the 1st century BC. This stunning piece of art depicts the Greek Goddess with elegance and poise, with every detail meticulously designed. An impressive collection of ancient coins is also on display, offering a unique glimpse into the trade and economy of the island during antiquity. Finally, visitors can also see marble reliefs from the Temple of Apollo that depict scenes from Greek Mythology and the marble head of Helios, a great example of Hellenistic baroque.
