With its rich history, Mediterranean climate, and Asian, African, and European influences, Rhodes is home to some of the most popular and high-quality products in all of Greece, some of which have been a staple of the island’s unique identity for many centuries.
The wine is the most famous product of Rhodes. Due to the fertile soil and the constant sun, winemaking has been a tradition in Rhodes since antiquity. There are numerous wineries on the island, such as Cair and Emery, that produce fine wine labels, including the dry wines Ilios and Grand Maitre and the dry red wine Chevalier de Rhodes. Many other small wineries are found throughout, particularly in Attaviros and Prophet Elias.
The honey of Rhodes is another one of its most popular offerings. With a rich taste and smooth texture, it is incorporated into many desserts and local delights and is the base for a special dessert known as melekouni (a healthy dessert with honey, almonds, and sesame seeds as its base). Melissokomiki Dodecanisou (the Beekeeping Company of the Dodecanese) is located in Rhodes and supplies a wide range of honey, as well as other beehive products. There is also the Museum of Bee and Honey, which showcases the history of beekeeping since the times of Ancient Greece.
Among the other products of Rhodes are its green crushed Rhodian olives, olive oil, herbs, vegetables (tomatoes) and fruits (watermelon, melon). A variety of cheeses is also produced on the island, such as goat cheese, feta, kefalotyri and mizithra.
