Location: Chora Don't miss: Museums guide (free admission dates and other useful info)
Nikolaidis Mansion is located in the northeastern part of Chora. This two-story building was built in segments during the 18th century. After the earthquake of 1956, it suffered major damage and had to be restored. The mansion mostly bears characteristics of the traditional architecture of Patmos, except for two distinguished, gothic-style windows. Today it serves as a museum, showcasing a collection of items and antiquities from the island’s past.
As they pass through the main entrance, visitors will be met with a small courtyard, where the main building resides. The single-aisle chapel of Saint Nicholas can also be seen here and is part of the mansion’s property. The ground floor of the mansion houses ovens, an area for storing food, and various storage facilities. The first floor is where the bedrooms can be found, along with the main hall and the upper courtyards. Of major interest is the ampataros, an elegantly decorated wooden object that was used for storage space and separating the different rooms.
A walk through the historic mansion will shine a light on the cultural heritage of the island and particularly the capital, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily lives of its past citizens.
The museum is open from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 14:00.
