General information

Skala is the largest settlement and port of Patmos. It is located in the central part of the island, about 4 km from Chora. It is well-developed with many tourist facilities. The small beach of Skala is situated next to the port, but its waters are crystal clear thanks to the north winds that keep the sea clean. Also known as Faliraki or Agios Theologos, it boasts a short sandy shore adorned with pebbles and a few trees, providing some nice shade to rest under.

It should be noted that some beach-goers have commented on the rowdy waves and rocky areas around the sea that make swimming difficult. Therefore the area is probably better suited for sunbathing and relaxing next to the sea. The beach itself is not organized and does not feature sunbeds, umbrellas, or other amenities. However, its proximity to the center of the port town means it is within walking distance of a variety of restaurants, cafes, and accommodations.

See the port from your hotel
Most (and best) hotels on Patmos are found in Skala because they give views to the long beach and the main port of Patmos. We chose to stay in Skala to be close to the port when we arrived and left the island. Anyway, I like the view of the port at night when ships with big lights or small fishing boats are moored there. Something close to the beach was also preferable. The beach of Skala was quite long and very clean. Water was not too cold or too warm, it was the right amount. I was surprised when I went one day to swim very early in the morning (8 a.m.) and the sea was warm. They had told me that beaches are warmer in the morning but I didn't believe them, it is true! Many lovely taverns line Skala beach with delicious dishes (altough there were not any traditional menu, just the typical food you find in every island). No bars, no clubs.
