Patmos Petra beach

General information

Petra Beach lies on the southeastern coast of Patmos, about 3.5 km from Chora. Its shore is wonderfully adorned with large pebbles, while the waters found here are crystal blue and usually calm. The beach is organized, offering umbrellas, sunbeds, and a canteen for all your food and drink needs. There are also some seaside restaurants in proximity to Petra, as well as a few accommodations.

Visitors are sure to notice the imposing Rock of Kalikatsou, overlooking the northern end of the beach. This enchanting natural formation served as a hermitage until the 14th century, featuring carved steps and a water tank that are still visible today. Excavations in the area have unearthed many interesting finds, including stone tools and ceramics. Beach-goers can venture out to the sight of the rock, where they will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the beach.

What is more, Petra Beach lies just opposite the beautiful Tragonisi Islet. Visitors can swim to the islet and experience its scenic charm firsthand, characterized by lush greenery and turquoise waters. However, the crossing can prove challenging, as there is maritime traffic, and thus not recommended for less experienced swimmers.

Access to Petra Beach is fairly easy, with the ride from Chora taking less than 10 minutes. As you make your way towards Petra, you will pass by the lovely settlement of Grikos. Located just a 20-minute walk from the beach, it boasts a variety of accommodations, cafes, and restaurants and is the perfect destination to wind down after a day of swimming.
