General information

Asfendiou is one of the most attractive villages of Kos, overlooking the sea from the slopes of Mount Dikeos, 14 km southwest of Kos Town. This historic village flourished during the 19th and 20th centuries, having almost 3,000 residents in 1951. Today Asfendiou is inhabited by a little over 200 people, most of whom are engaged in viticulture and olive oil production.

The narrow alleys and the picturesque neighborhoods found in Asfendiou compose a beautiful atmosphere within an enchanting landscape. Many traditional houses, old churches, and stone towers can be found here. Notable are the ruins of an early Christian Basilica dedicated to Saint Paul as well as the domed Orthodox Church of Panagia Evangelistria. The surrounding area is covered with lush vegetation and abundant spring waters. At the top of Mount Dikeos, you will have the chance to visit the small chapel of Christ and take some breathtaking photos of the island.

Asfendiou offers some nice accommodations in addition to excellent taverns and traditional cafes. The village is a reference point for travelers not only for its natural beauty but also for its proximity to some of the most remarkable villages of Kos like the famous Zia and Lagoudi. The neighboring Asomatos is characterized by a rustic charm and is dominated by the imposing Church of Asomatos.
