When leaving the village of Antimachia, following the road towards Kefalos, travelers will stumble upon the wonderful forest of Plaka. Located 26 km from Kos Town, this natural haven boasts a secluded position far from the big tourist hubs of the island. This creates a serene atmosphere amidst the pine-covered landscape, perfect for a relaxing walk or a midday picnic.
Plaka is known for the peacock population that inhabits it. Visitors will get a chance to observe these colorful creatures as they roam free in their natural habitat and can even feed them by hand, as they are friendly to humans. In addition to these magnificent birds, the area hosts dozens of stray cats, terrapins (aquatic turtles), and even some squirrels, all living in harmony with each other.
A few benches can be found throughout, perfect for resting under the shade of the pine trees. The forest features many paths for endless walks and a spring with clean flowing water that adds to the area's natural ambiance. Visitors of Plaka may also stop by the lovely white chapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos (St. John) on the south side of the forest.
