General information

The mountainous village of Volada is located 10 km northwest of Pigadia, the capital of Karpathos, and just 2.5 km and 1.5 km from Aperi and Othos respectively. This picturesque settlement was built among trees at an altitude of about 440 meters. Today, it is populated by approximately 240 inhabitants.

The village’s idyllic location affords it a gorgeous view of the sea, Pigadia, and the neighboring village of Aperi. It is characterized by traditional whitewashed houses of typical Karpathian architecture along with various colorful flower yards and neoclassical villas. A walk through the narrow and winding streets of Volada unlocks the area’s rustic beauty, punctuated by some lookout points that offer unforgettable views. The village also features some traditional taverns and cafes.

The Church of Panagia Plagia serves as Volada’s religious center and holds a celebration every year on the 8th of September. The ruins of three castles stand like guardians overlooking the village. Each castle was built during a different historical period, the oldest dating to the Bronze Age and the newest to the time of the Turkish occupation. Right before you enter the village you will find many hiking trails, some of which lead to the top of Kali Limni Mountain, the highest point on the island.
