Karpathos Pigadia

General information

Built around a natural bay sheltered by three uninhabited islets —Affoti, Garonisos and Despotikon— Pigadia is the capital town and main port of Karpathos. Besides passenger ferries, Pigadia Port serves a lot of excursion boats, which take visitors to the island’s top beaches, as well as to the enchanting Saria Islet.

The area has been identified with the ancient city of Potidaion (or Poseidion), founded by Dorian settlers around 1000 BC, while the earliest traces of human activity date from the Bronze Age and the Mycenaean times. Named after Poseidon, the god of the sea, it boasted an acropolis, whose ruins can still be seen on top of the hill overlooking the town. During the Middle Ages, its inhabitants were forced to relocate to the inland as a result of the constant pirate raids, and it wasn’t until centuries later that the present-day town was eventually constructed. Serving as the island’s capital since 1892, it was renamed Karpathos Town in 1953.

It is a picturesque town with narrow alleys and colorful houses built by Greeks who had emigrated to the US and come back to the island during the summer months. Its quaint seaside promenade is a great place for a walk and abounds in cafes and restaurants that serve local delicacies, as well as in vibrant bars, where you can enjoy a good drink to the sound of Greek and foreign music. Being Karpathos’ most well-developed center, it also provides plenty of hotels and apartments of all categories, guaranteeing a comfortable and relaxing stay.

More about Pigadia

Besides the remnants of the ancient acropolis and the Cyclopean walls on top of the hill, visitors will find a small Archaeological Museum exhibiting the most significant findings excavated on the island. Next to the museum, there is also an open-air theater housing several concerts and other cultural events during the summer months. The Province House, an imposing Art Deco building which was erected by the Italians in the early 20th century and now houses the Town Hall, also stands in the very heart of the town.

The main church, Agioi Apostoli, houses some remarkable frescoes, while, on the outskirts of Pigadia, lie the ruins of Agia Foteini, an early Christian basilica. Another interesting sight is the Cave of Poseidon on the location of Myli, which was used as a place of worship in antiquity. The sanctuary on the cave walls is believed to have been carved out in honor of Poseidon (or perhaps Aphrodite).

Around the port stretches the clean and sandy Pigadia Beach, which attracts crowds of visitors during the summer months.

    Plenty of things to do
Pigadia is the capital of Karpathos. Nice and small town. It was pretty much what I got through when I was surfing your pages and photos. And what I was looking for, certainly!! Not many inhabitants, I can say that the tourists were more than the permanent inhabitants of the island. However, good service at hotels and taverns. Tasty food and generally low prices, in comparison to other islands that we went after Karpathos, such as Rhodes and Kos which were more expensive. Certainly go, you will find plenty of quiet things to do. Swim in Ammopi, take the boat to go to
beaches around the island, walk to the pine-tree forest close to Pigadia and eat by the sea. Just one recommendation: make a open cinema in Pigadia. It would greatly fit to the vibe of the island.
