Karpathos Mesochori

General information

Mesochori is fairly secluded and lies far from busier tourist resorts, offering a serene and quiet atmosphere. Surrounded by a mountainous landscape with lush greenery just beside the sea, the views afforded by the village’s stunning location are among the best on the island, especially as the sun begins to set.

Mesochori is populated by about 250 inhabitants, most of whom are engaged in agriculture. The village displays a traditional character thanks to its charming whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, and courtyards adorned with flowers and plants. The traditional architecture of the houses reveals the interesting history of Mesochori. Locals try to keep the tradition alive in all aspects, with local festivals being held every year that feature authentic Karpathian food, drinks, and dances.

The most important landmark in Mesochori is the Church of Panagia Vrysiani. Located on the north side of the village, it was built in 1553 and later renovated in 1791. The church is distinguished by its white exterior, impressive bell tower, and interesting location right next to a natural spring. It celebrates annually on the 8th of September with a three-day feast that sees visitors from throughout the island.

The Church of St. John the Baptist is another popular attraction, dating to 1781 and featuring beautiful frescoes. Worth a visit is the square of Skopi (Platia Skopi) which houses the tiny chapels of Agia Triada and offers gorgeous panoramic views of the sea. The surrounding area provides numerous hiking trails that take you through some remarkable natural landscapes. Just a few kilometers from Mesochori also lie the picturesque villages of Lefkos and Spoa.
