Karpathos Arkassa

General information

Arkassa is a beautiful village on the southwestern coast of Karpathos, 16 kilometers from Pigadia and no more than 10 kilometers from Karpathos Airport. Although it has many tourist facilities, it keeps its authentic traditional flair, with narrow alleys and beautiful houses.

The area flourished in ancient times, and the ruins of the Acropolis of Arkassa can still be seen on top of the nearby Palaiokastro Hill, along with the remnants of the early Christian basilica of Agia Anastasia. Constructed in the 5th century, this church boasted marvelous mosaic floors, part of which has been preserved in the courtyard, while the rest have been transported to the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes. In the village center, there is also a small Archaeological and Folklore Museum, housing findings from the acropolis and the basilica.

The region surrounding Arkassa impresses visitors with its rugged beauty and has many trekking paths. Moreover, close to the village of Arkassa are the lovely Agios Nikolaos Beach and Agios Georgios Beach, which boast fine sand and crystalline waters.
