The mountainous settlement of Olympos possesses a one-of-a-kind traditional charm, its rustic streets and vibrant buildings indicative of the rich history of the island. The village is dominated by the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, or as it is known to some the Olympos Cathedral. Found at the end of the main pedestrian street, it is one of the most beautiful churches in all of Karpathos and holds great religious significance to the village and its inhabitants.
Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the church was built in 1500 AD in the traditional Byzantine style. It is instantly recognizable by its impressive bell tower, next to a small courtyard adorned with flowers. Just by the entrance, you will notice the bust of painter Manolis Papamanolis, who was born in Olympos and was a member of the Greek resistance during World War II.
The interior of the church features colorful frescoes dating to the years of Turkish rule and portraying various religious figures and biblical scenes. Some Byzantine-era art can also be seen. What is more, the church houses an impressive collection of valuable icons and relics, while equally as impressive are its magnificent chandeliers.
Every year on August 15th, the residents organize a big festival dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. The celebrations include women wearing traditional attire, men playing musical instruments, and hours of joyous drinking and dancing. The charming Saint Filimon Church is located just a minute’s walk away from the Olympos Cathedral and is also worth a visit.
