One of the island's natural sites is the Cave of Poseidon, in the location of Myloi. The cave’s portal has been carved out of the rock, as have some niches on the inside. It was used either as a tomb or a sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon, the god of the sea, though some archaeologists have claimed it might have been dedicated to Aphrodite instead. This hypothesis is based on the discovery of statuettes depicting Aphrodite in the area around the cave.
Unfortunately, the cave has been used by shepherds for a long time, and, therefore, what you will see today is a much-eroded version of the original monument.
To access the cave, you will have to drive southwest of Pigadia, in the direction of Vroutsa. As soon as you enter a narrow passage traversed by a stream, you will notice some crumbling buildings and dry-stack constructions on the left side.
Park your car and proceed on foot along the path that leads to Menetes, passing by the Cave of Poseidon.
Partake in an easy-going hiking experience and walk through wide valleys, settlements, and the countryside of Karpathos! This guided trip will take you through olive groves to Poseidon’s Temple and a picturesque chapel, and allow you to taste local herbal tea and drinks.
