The church of Agia Sofia is located on the site of the ancient city of Arkesia, now known as Arkassa. This early Christian basilica was built atop the ruins of an older church that was dedicated to Agia Anastasia. Lying at the foot of Paleokakstro Hill, this charming religious center is the first stop one should make, before traversing the hill to reach the ancient Acropolis of Arkassa.
The ruins of the old church consist of three large basilicas built one over another and separated by intricate mosaic floors that distinctly mark the site. It is assumed to be an early Byzantine creation and is a much-cherished possession for its magnificent and attractive architecture. The small church of Agia Sofia has an all-white exterior and houses a collection of religious icons.
