Location: Menetes

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin lies at the edge of the charming Menetes Village, about 6.5 km from Pigadia. Inaugurated in 1845, this three-aisled basilica stands as one of the most striking religious landmarks in Karpathos. Its idyllic position affords it an unparalleled panoramic view of Menetes, where visitors can take in the mountainous terrain adorned with colorful houses.

The church is distinguished by its white facade and imposing bell tower overlooking a small courtyard. Inside an icon of the Virgin Mary is prominently on display and is said to possess miraculous abilities. There is also an intricate wood-carved temple in addition to the wooden throne of the High Priest Nikiforos. The large marble columns seen here were repurposed from the ruins of Agia Anastasia Church in Ancient Arkassa. Every August 15th, the church holds a grand festival in honor of the Virgin Mary.
