On a verdant slope close to Apella Beach, visitors will find the Agios Loukas Cave Church, an impressive and highly unusual chapel that has been declared a listed monument.
The chapel consists of an exonarthex that has crumbled down, as well as a domed narthex fashioned inside a cave, which is adorned with elaborate 13th-century frescoes that have sadly suffered the wear of time. Excavations carried out in the wider area in 2002 have revealed that it formed part of a larger complex.
The listing picture was taken from the official website of the Municipality of Karpathos (www.karpathos.gr).
