Kalymnos Emporio

General information

The picturesque village of Emporio is located 19 km northwest of Pothia, the capital of Kalymnos. Emporio is the most remote village on the island, lying at the end of the main road. About 40 inhabitants live permanently in the area, most of whom are engaged in cattle breeding and farming. The village got its name from the Greek word emporio, which means trade, as it had been an important commercial center in ancient years.

Nestled among rocky hills and olive groves, the small and quiet village displays an authentic Kalymnian charm. Beautiful white houses emblematic of traditional architecture line the many narrow alleys that one can get lost exploring during their visit. A lovely blue-domed church stands at the center of Emporio with an impressive bell tower overlooking the blue sea. A few types of accommodations are available as well as some nice cafes and local taverns that serve Mediterranean dishes in beautiful seaside environments.

More about Emporio

A couple of pristine beaches located within a short walking distance from the village offer the ideal conditions for a refreshing dip in the glistening Aegean. Emporio Beach is the village’s main attraction, featuring a wonderful sandy shore and shallow waters. The beach is dotted with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a collection of cafes. From here beach-goers can enjoy views of the neighboring islet of Telendos. Alexis Beach and Maiks Beach can also be found nearby and remain completely unorganized, providing a serene natural environment.

The remains of an old Fort from the Hellenistic Period lie on the north side of the village, about 600 meters from the center. Referred to as Kastri, this once imposing fortification used to be comprised of strong walls, two defense towers, and a gate. Today part of the Cyclopean Walls of Saint George have been preserved, as has the base of an old olive presser. The surrounding area offers some good hiking opportunities, with numerous trails allowing you to explore the island’s northern landscapes.
