Location: Vathy

The Church of Panagia Kyra Psili is a unique religious landmark, located inside the cave of a mountain about 6 km north of Vathy. The Church dates back to the 18th century and was built within an abandoned Byzantine fortification. According to legend, it was constructed by a Kalymnian who rediscovered his faith upon returning to the island. Local folklore also speaks of a man who found an icon of the Virgin Mary inside the cave and failed to take it back to his village, as it kept mysteriously returning to the cave.

Lying on the side of an imposing mountain, the Church is surrounded by an all-white wall courtesy of the older fortification that once stood there. The scenery from here is truly breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the mountainous island and a wonderfully serene atmosphere. Going through the entrance, visitors will see a few stairs leading to the cave’s interior. A few icons and religious artifacts, as well as an area where you can light a candle, are found inside the cave.

Today, the icon of the Virgin Mary has been transferred to the village of Vathy. On August 15th the locals return the icon to the Church of Panagia Kyra Psili in celebration of the Day of the Assumption. What is more, a feast is held there every year, consisting of authentic Kalymnian food, drinks, and music.
