The Monastery of the Holy Cross lies on a hill overlooking the village of Panormos, about 5 km northwest of Pothia, the island’s capital. Established around the early 20th century, it was built inside a cave where the holy icon of the cross was found. A small wall was built around the cave to protect the place of worship and a garden was planted to add to the lush environment of the area.
Inside the Monastery one will find a small collection of religious icons and holy relics. Its highly advantageous position offers stunning panoramic views of the settlement of Panormos, the surrounding hills, and the vast blue waters of the Aegean. The area is also blessed with one of the most fabulous sunsets on the island, attracting thousands of visitors looking to experience its unparalleled scenic beauty.
To reach the Monastery, you must follow a winding rocky path that begins at the edge of Panormos. At the start of the trail, you will see the picturesque Church of Agios Athanasios which is distinguished by its white and blue exterior and bell tower and is very much worth a visit. From there it should only take you about a 10 to 15-minute walk along the steep rocky path before reaching the Monastery of the Holy Cross.
The Monastery celebrates every year on September 14th, the day of the Elevation of the Holy Cross. On September 13th, the eve of the celebration, it is tradition for hundreds of Kalymnians to climb up to the Monastery and attend the vespers.
