Astypalea Town

General information

At the heart of this island lies Astypalea Town or Chora, the main town and administrative center, which offers a harmonious blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and cultural richness. It is strategically situated atop a hill, providing panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding islands. This elevated position was a strategic advantage in ancient times, allowing inhabitants to monitor and defend against potential invaders.

The architectural landscape is a testament to its rich history and cultural heritage. Whitewashed houses with blue shutters and doors line the narrow, winding streets, creating a picturesque setting that is characteristic of Cycladic architecture. The town’s layout is a labyrinth of alleys and squares, each revealing charming details such as the traditional windmills, quaint chapels, and vibrant bougainvillea cascading over stone walls. The central square is a hub for social interaction, surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and shops with local products and crafts.

Chora’s popularity can be attributed to its unique blend of historical sites, natural beauty, and authentic Greek island atmosphere. The village's central location makes it an ideal base for exploring the rest of Astypalea, with easy access to nearby beaches, hiking trails, and other attractions. Despite its popularity, Chora has managed to retain its traditional charm, offering visitors a glimpse into the local way of life.

More about Astypalea Town

The history of Chora is deeply intertwined with the Venetian era. In the 15th century, the Venetian noble family of Querini established a stronghold on the island, constructing the imposing Venetian Castle that still dominates the town’s skyline. Most of the houses inside the castle have collapsed due to an earthquake that struck the island in 1956. A tower called Saray still stands tall at the southern end of the castle, and two churches with whitewashed walls continue to stand out amidst the gray stone walls. The first one, near the entrance, called Panagia Kastrou, was built in 1853 and dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Building material from the homes of the Querini family was used for its construction. Further in, there is the church of Agios Georgios, built in 1790.

A significant tourist site is the Church of Panagia Portaitissa, located in the heart of Chora. This church is dedicated to Panagia Portaitissa of the Holy Monastery of Iviron and houses a revered icon brought to Astypalea by Saint Anthimos in 1762. The church serves as the religious center of the island and is a focal point for both locals and visitors. For those interested in history and archaeology, the Archaeological Museum offers a collection of artifacts that shed light on the island’s past. The museum is housed in a ground-floor hall and features exhibits that have been organized and enriched over the years, providing insights into the island’s ancient civilizations.

Beyond its historical and architectural attractions, Chora offers a variety of activities for visitors. The town’s central square is lined with cafes and restaurants where guests can savor local cuisine, including fresh seafood, traditional Greek dishes, and regional specialties. The vibrant nightlife features bars and music venues that provide entertainment into the early hours.

For those seeking outdoor activities, Chora serves as a gateway to the island’s natural beauty. Hiking trails lead to lovely shores, such as Livadi Beach and Agios Konstantinos, where visitors can enjoy swimming and sunbathing in crystal-clear waters. The island’s diverse landscapes, including rugged hills and serene coves, are perfect for exploration and adventure.

The town can be accessed via a network of well-maintained roads connecting it to various parts of the island, including the main port of Pera Gialos. Visitors can reach Chora by car, taxi, or local buses that operate regularly, ensuring convenient access for travelers.
