AstyBus

Another affordable and eco-friendly way of moving around Astypalea is via the island’s Astybus ride-sharing service, which is based on a fleet of electric mini-buses. In order to avail themselves of this option, travelers need to download the Astymove app on their mobile phones prior to arrival, go through the registration process, and fill in the desired pick-up and drop-off time and location. The cost of the ride depends on the number of zones included in the route, as the island is divided into 5 zones.

Car rentals

With a car or motorcycle, you can explore the island at your own pace and gain access to the most secluded spots! In case you don't have your own vehicle, it is an excellent idea to rent a car for your sightseeing trips! As the biggest part of the island consists of dirt roads that are hard to access, it is recommended that you hire a motorcycle or jeep. You will find some car rental spots in Astypalea Town. Via the aforementioned Astymove app, visitors can also rent an electric car or scooter and pay per minute for short routes, or buy an hour package depending on how long they intend to use the vehicle.

Taxis and private transfers

Taxis might be a more expensive option when compared to buses, but they offer you an easy and fast transfer to your destination. Please bear in mind that the cost of the ride will ultimately depend on the distance. Though you can find some taxis in central spots of the island, like Chora, it is recommended that you call a local driver and arrange a pick-up by calling on any of the following numbers: 0030 22430 61204, 0030 697 6256461, 0030 697 2081581, 0030 697 5706365.

Water Taxis

Operating between May and September, water taxis are an enjoyable way of reaching some of the island’s better-hidden gems, such as Drakos Cave or the enchanting Kounoupa and Koutsomiti. Boats depart from the port of Pera Gialos and Maltezana.

• How can I get to my hotel from the airport?

Astypalea Airport is not connected by public transport to the capital or any other settlement on the island. Consequently, arranging a pick-up by contacting a local taxi driver or via the Astymove app is the best way of reaching your accommodation from the airport. Alternatively, it is also possible to contact a car rental agency prior to your arrival and have your vehicle delivered to you at the airport.

• How can I get to my hotel from the port?

If you have arranged to stay in Astypalea Town, reaching your accommodation from the port on foot or by taxi should be fairly easy. By contrast, if your accommodation lies close to one of the other villages, such as Pera Gialos, Livadi and Analipsi, the best thing to do is to take a bus or arrange your transfer via the Astymove app. Renting a car would also be a convenient transportation option.

• How can I get to Astypalea Town?

Astypalea Port is conveniently located in Astypalea Town, the island’s main settlement, so the town center and its facilities will be within walking distance. On the other hand, the airport is around 8 kilometers away from Astypalea Town, so pre-arranging a pick-up with a local taxi driver or via the Astymove app is the best thing to do to leave the airport immediately. Again, it is also possible to schedule an airport pick-up with a car rental agency prior to your arrival and have your vehicle delivered to you at the airport.

• How can I get to some of the finest beaches?

Buses starting from Astypalea Town stop at some of the island’s most popular beaches, such as Pera Gialos, Livadi, and Maltezana. However, in order to access the rest of Astypalea’s beaches, you will need to rent a car or arrange your transfer via the island’s ride-sharing service. Moreover, the dreamy beaches of Kounoupa and Koutsomiti, which are located on the respective homonymous islets, can only be accessed via water taxis from Pera Gialos or Maltezana.

• Can I rely on public means of transport?

During the high season, the number of itineraries increases, which makes buses a convenient way of moving around. However, secluded spots are not served by public transport at all, while buses may also run irregularly. The Astybus ride-sharing service also provides a reliable alternative to buses when it comes to public transport.

• Are the distances between Astypalea Town and the touristy spots long?

Though distances between Astypalea Town and destinations in the southwestern part of the island tend to be relatively short, many of the island’s beaches and places of interest, especially those located on the eastern side of Astypalea, are more remote.
