Location: Town

Originally constructed in 1762, the Church of Panagia Portaitissa is the spiritual center of Astypalea. It was established by Saint Anthimos, who brought a faithful copy of the icon of Panagia Portaitissa from Mount Athos to the island. The construction process lasted for approximately nine years, during which several miracles are said to have taken place.

Today, the church is a site of pilgrimage for the people of Astypalea, and a big traditional feast takes place there every year between the 14th and the 16th of August, on the occasion of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
