A lovely natural attraction in Astypalea is the Cave of Drakos, whose name actually means “the cave of the dragon”. Located on the northeastern side of Astypalea, it can be reached via boats starting from the village of Vathi, but it is also a nice trekking destination if you can handle the rough path.
The cave is adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites of different colors, which have been formed over time as the mineral-rich water ran off the roof. In the past centuries, Drakos Cave was associated with marauding pirates and was thought to be one of the places where they hid their treasures.
Other caverns that you can explore in Astypalea are the Cave of Panagia Poulariani, which can be found on the island's highest mountain, and the Cave of Negros in the area of Vatses. The latter is accessible both on foot via a hiking trail and by boat from the settlement of Pera Gialos.
