Tinos Town

General information

Tinos Town, also known as Chora, is the capital and main harbor of the island. It was first inhabited around the 17th to 18th centuries, after the residents of the previous capital, Exomvourgo, abandoned the area due to the threat of pirate attacks. Over the past few decades, this settlement has had a rapid development. Today, it hosts the largest part of the population of Tinos (over 6,000 people) and serves as the main tourist hub and commercial center of the island.

The discovery of the miraculous icon of the Virgin in 1823 was one of the most important factors in the development of the town. The Church of Evangelistria was subsequently built to house the icon and is to this day one of the island’s most important attractions. Part of a larger monastery, the imposing church stands out for its impressive architecture, all-marble exterior, and beautiful bell tower. Thousands of pilgrims visit the church every year, paying their respects to the holy icon and praying for good health and prosperity.

More about Tinos Town

Two main roads lead to the Church of Evangelistria. The newer of these streets is called Megalocharis Avenue and is where the City Hall of Tinos is located. Along the street, you will also find the Archaeological Museum of Tinos, which showcases findings from excavations that were conducted all over the island. Evangelistrias Street is the older of the two and serves as the main shopping street of the area. Running parallel along the avenue, it is stone paved and has a beautiful 18th-century marble fountain with impressive carvings as well as many art galleries displaying the works of local painters. This street has many shops, next to one another, that form a market lane of colorful products and unique souvenirs.

The new white apartment buildings and three or four-story houses live harmoniously with the traditional old houses and flowered courtyards, maintaining an authentic Cycladic flair that makes the town attractive. The tourism infrastructure in Tinos Town is well-developed, with plenty of restaurants, taverns, pastry shops, cafes, bars, and hotels available in the area. Visitors craving a refreshing drip into the crystalline waters that surround the island can venture out to the charming Agali Beach, found on the southeastern side of the town.

Visitors can move around Tinos Town by public (KTEL) bus, with frequent bus routes available daily. You can also opt to call a taxi for easier transfer to your destination. Finally, you will be able to find plenty of car rentals in the area, which allow you to explore the town at a much more comfortable pace.
