Tinos Falatados

General information

Located 11.5 km northeast of Tinos Town, the traditional village of Falatados is known for being the second largest settlement after Pyrgos. Built on a mountainside, it is surrounded by a wild and rocky natural landscape and tufts of greenery. The origins of its name remain ambiguous to this day, with some believing that it was named after the prosperous Valata family.

Today, Falatados maintains its traditional character, through the whitewashed houses, pebbled streets, and beautiful arches found throughout the village. Its inhabitants are mostly engaged in agriculture and livestock farming, while in the past the area was also known for its tannery and silk processing. The village displays some abandoned buildings that were once used for the production of handicrafts, along with old winepresses and raki distilleries. In September, a feast is organized, during which the locals drink copious amounts of raki and play traditional music.

The center of Falatados is dominated by the impressive Cathedral of Saint John and the Holy Trinity. Constructed in the early 20th century, it stands out for its magnificent blue dome and marble exterior. Inside, it is richly decorated and adorned with 17th-century icons. You will also find a small museum known as the Sketch House, showcasing the political drawings of the Mitropoulos brothers. A few restaurants, cafes, and accommodations are available in the area as well.
