Tinos Dyo Choria

General information

With its strong medieval character and its breathtaking views of all the neighboring Cycladic islands, the mountainous Dyo Choria ranks among the most beautiful villages of Tinos. Built at an altitude of 380 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Mount Kechrovouni, it originally consisted of two different villages, which merged into one over the course of time.

Surrounded by a verdant ravine with abundant springs, Dyo Choria stands out for its particularly picturesque cobblestone square, adorned with traditional fountains and shaded by lush plane trees. Around the square stretches a magical castle-like maze of narrow alleys with elaborate archways and dimly lit passageways formed by the upper floors of the houses themselves. Here and there, bougainvilleas and basil shrubs contrast with the whitewashed walls, adding to the settlement’s unpretentious beauty.

If you happen to be in Tinos in early August, it is good to know that Dyo Choria organizes a colorful Oregano Festival approximately one week before the great feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (August 15th). The event is accompanied by traditional music and dancing, as well as plenty of delicious mezes, raki and chocolate pies, and is an excellent chance to immerse yourself in the local culture.
