Location: Agios Fokas

Located on a cone-shaped hill close to the beach of Agios Fokas, the fortified acropolis of Vryokastro is the oldest one ever excavated in Tinos.

Shells brought to light by archaeological research indicate that the settlement had been inhabited at least since the Early Bronze Age, between 3000 and 2300 BC, while over the next centuries, it became better organized and a strong wall was constructed at the top of the hill. However, after the decline of the Minoan palatial centers of Crete around 1450 BC, it seems to have been abandoned so that its inhabitants could resettle in more favorable locations.

As no systematic excavations have been conducted in Vryokastro, only parts of the walls can be seen today. However, despite the strong winds that blow in the area, the hike up to the top of the hill is rewarding, as it affords stunning views of Tinos and the Aegean Sea.
