The Monastery of Holy Trinity (or Agia Triada) is located in the village of Gyrla, about 3.5 km northeast of Tinos Town. It is believed to have been constructed in the 11th century and later renovated by monk Grigorios from Mount Athos in 1744. During Turkish rule, the monastery would function as a secret school run by monks fighting to preserve Greek teachings and traditions.
The monastery is built in a beautiful, eye-catching location and is an important contribution to the title "Holy Island" that Tinos has earned over the years. The main church houses a wood-carved iconostasis from 1764 that displays some wonderful 18th-century icons. In addition to the church, you will find a library with rare books and documents along with a mausoleum. Visitors can also see the crypt that once housed the secret school. A small folklore museum lies here as well, showcasing a nice collection of folk art.
