Located just 1 kilometer from Agios Sostis Beach, in a fertile coastal valley of southeastern Tinos, Smovolo Tower occupies a strategic position with commanding views of the strait leading to Mykonos, Delos and Naxos. Its construction date is estimated between the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century BC, and it is believed that it used to house a garrison for the protection of the wider area’s farmers.
It is a cylindrical structure with an external diameter of 7 meters and has been built with rectangular blocks of marble. In its current form, it reaches an overall height of 4.70 meters, up to the floor of the now-lost upper story. The name of the architect who designed it, Lysitheos Aristoboulos, has been inscribed on a stone embedded on the tower wall.
