Constructed in 1886, Planitis Lighthouse stands on the uninhabited islet of Planitis, adjacent to Kavalourko and opposite Panormos Beach. It is an impressive rectangular structure built with stones and Tinian white marble, while the lighthouse tower reaches a height of 8 meters.
It is one of the oldest in the Cyclades and its historical value along with its beautiful masonry has led to its being declared a listed monument. However, since the old oil-powered mechanism was replaced with an automated one right after the Second World War, the building has been left to its fate and has sadly suffered the wear of time.
Though no boats are going to Planitis islet, all you need in order to visit this historic lighthouse is a swimsuit and a pair of sturdy walking shoes.
