The Catholic and Orthodox Churches of Panagia Faneromeni lie on the eastern side of the island, about 6 km east of the settlement of Steni. These beautiful religious structures stand next to each other, emblematic of the harmonious coexistence of the Catholic and Orthodox faiths on the island.
Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Churches of Panagia Faneromeni (Virgin Mary the Revealed) present traditional architectural elements. Whitewashed walls, blue accents, and wonderful bell towers create a lovely picture, set against the glistening blue of the Aegean. There are two separate entrances, each leading to one of the two temples. The landscape surrounding the churches is characterized by rugged hills and tufts of greenery, adding an untamed natural charm to the area.
The Churches hold a feast on the 23rd of August, marked by religious ceremonies, local delicacies, and lots of singing and dancing. The Catholic and Orthodox communities all gather in the semi-outdoor space in front of the churches, celebrating alongside one another and respecting each other’s customs and traditions.
