The Monastery of Kechrovouni lies on the homonymous Mt. Kechrovouni, in the village of Arnados, about 8 km northwest of Tinos Town. It was established around the 10th or 11th century and houses seven total churches inside its walls, one of which is the Agia Pelagia Holy Orthodox Church.
Agia Pelagia lived in the monastery from a young age. Tradition says that in July 1823, when Pelagia was 70 years old, she was visited by the Virgin Mary in her dreams. The Virgin indicated the location of a buried holy icon and motivated Pelagia to initiate excavations. The nun would eventually venture out to the location she saw in her dreams and dig up the icon, which led to the founding of the Church of Evangelistria in Tinos Town.
The church itself boasts a striking white exterior, with marble features and an impressive bell tower. Inside it is decorated with beautiful frescoes and a lovely iconostasis. In the area of the monastery, one can also see the cells where Pelagia saw the vision of the Virgin.
In celebration of the discovery of the icon, every year on July 23rd it is transported to the Church of Agia Pelagia, accompanied by a mass and a procession.
