Founded in 2010 in the vicinity of Falatados village, Volacus Winery is a small establishment whose excellent organic wines offer “a taste of summer in the Cyclades”, as the Guardian has appositely written. One of the things that make Volacus Winery stand out is the unique location of its vineyards: in a wild, lunar landscape strewn with huge granite boulders known as volakes — hence its name.
Guided by the area’s reputation in viticulture in ancient times, Michalis Kontizas, the owner of the winery, has experimented with varieties particularly suited to this rocky, mountainous terrain, producing top-quality wines imbued with the distinctive properties of the Cycladic, argillaceous soil. Don’t miss the chance to visit the premises and savor a glass of exquisite Malagouzia wine. The wine tasting is accompanied by such Tinian delicacies as the ruby-colored louza (air-dried pork cured in red wine), graviera cheese and the Tinian kariki, a spicy blue cheese made from cow’s milk.
The winery can be visited between July and September upon request, so make sure to contact the owner to arrange your tour.
