Situated on Tinos’ central Alavanou Avenue, To Spitiko is a bakery dating back to 1928 , which has been run by the Fonsos family for three generations. Built on a small terrace surrounded by a stone wall, this all-white building with its large glass windows, the design is telling of the baked goods within: To Spitiko has successfully incorporated all modern developments without sacrificing its traditional character.
To Spitiko is perhaps the most popular bakery on Tinos and offers everything you’d expect from such an establishment: freshly baked bread every morning, koulouri or bread rings, traditional kourou pastries, kritsinia breadsticks, paximadia rusks, sandwiches, and a wide array of sweets, from cakes to tahini pies to panettone. Like most modern bakeries, one can find coffee here, and many locals pair their breakfast with a freddo espresso, the Greek favorite. Freshly-squeezed orange juice and homemade lemonade are also available.
It offers a great variety of bread, with a soft spot for sourdough, and the orange and almond cookies are always a hit. Breadsticks covered in locally produced graviera cheese are also popular.
Around Easter, its ovens pump out tsoureki, the traditional Greek sweet holiday bread, and lagana, a flatbread made exclusively during Lent.
To Spitiko has two additional locations: one at Megalocharis Avenue, as well as the family’s first establishment in the village of Komi.
