With its long-standing tradition, which began with the refugees that came to the island from Chios in the 1820s, no other place in Greece is as renowned for its loukoumia as Syros. Thus, no trip to Syros would be complete without tasting its aromatic loukoumia, one of the most typical Greek desserts.
Established in 1928 by Georgios Sykoutris, who came to Syros after the Burning of Smyrna, Sykoutris Loukoumia is a family-run business that passes on from generation to generation the authentic age-old secrets behind the art of loukoumi-making. Its products are literally handmade using the purest ingredients —spring water, starch, mastic, rose syrup, thyme honey, fresh eggs and nuts— and have earned prestigious distinctions like the London Great Taste Awards in 2003. Besides a variety of loukoumi flavors, visitors will also find delicious nougat pies.
