Sikinos Chora

General information

Chora Village Sikinos: Chora is the capital of Sikinos and consists of two settlements, Horio and Kastro, both beautiful and located only a few meters away from each other. Chora is located about 4 km to the north of the port of Alopronia.

Kastro is a fortified settlement dating from the 15th century. It is built at the edge of the hill offering remarkable panoramic views to the sea. Only a small part of it is developed with commercial activities where you can find numerous local shops, kafenia and traditional taverns serving excellent Greek specialties. The other part of Kastro remains unspoilt and displays interesting byzantine churches and old castles that attract every visitor.

The village is equally beautiful and picturesque and quite more developed. A stroll around the settlement reveals a small labyrinth of narrow paths, secret passages and old mansions.

The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, an 18th century church is the most important monument of Sikinos for its unique architecture. Its imposing location on top of the hill offers breathtaking views to the sea.

Chora is one of the most beautiful towns of Cyclades with its stone built houses and the narrow paths.Today, the villagers lead a traditional life, preserving their customs and festivities. Sikinos is not a cosmopolitan island with crazy nightlife but it can offer you some unique moments of relaxation and tranquility. The island is worth explored for its pristine beaches and unspoilt landscape. It is well-known for its wine production, a strong tradition that started from the ancient times.

Transport facilities in Chora are limited to boats and a few buses. It is worth mentioned that until recently, mules and donkeys were used as the main mode of transport within the island. Sikinos hosts interesting monuments like the monastery of Episkopi, museums and beautiful historic buildings.
