Sifnos Artemonas

General information

Artemonas is a quiet village situated just above the island’s capital, Apollonia. Built amphitheatrically atop a small hill, the village is characterized by its serene ambiance and beautiful scenery, its highest points offering wonderful panoramic views. Its name originates from the goddess Artemis, who was worshipped in Sifnos during antiquity and had a temple dedicated to her in the area.

Today, Artemonas has become one of the biggest settlements in Sifnos, hosting over 800 permanent residents. Charming cafes, taverns, and restaurants serve delicious meals and refreshing beverages, while there are plenty of stores, gift shops, and supermarkets in the area as well.

The beautiful settlement displays some of the most elegant traditional old mansions of Sifnos. These buildings attest to the area’s prosperous past, having once been the grounds for a bustling shipping industry. A stroll down the village’s paved streets is sure to fascinate visitors, revealing the unique Venetian architecture along with neoclassical homes with beautiful verdant gardens. Two old, well-preserved windmills can be seen on the tallest hill of the village, presenting a beautiful setting consisting of the glistening waters of the Aegean and the rural beauty of the island.

Artemonas is also home to many remarkable and historically important churches and monasteries. On the site of the old temple of Artemis now stands the Parish Church of Panagia Koghis, which features striking whitewashed walls and vibrant frescoes. The Church of Panagia of Ammos is another impressive religious site, renowned for housing the icon of Panagia Monachi, a rare depiction of the Virgin Mary without the Holy Infant. The imposing Church of Agios Spyridonas and the enchanting Church of Agios Konstantinos and Agia Eleni are equally worth a visit.

Artemonas offers various types of accommodation to choose from. From small hotels to rooms available for rent, most accommodations boast traditional architectural elements that are harmonious with the village’s old buildings. In the village, one shall also find the best pastry shops and bakeries making traditional Sifnian sweets.

Lastly, the village is well-connected with the rest of Sifnos through public buses and is the last stop for all the island’s bus routes.
