Sifnos Tower of Exambela

The ruins of one of the island's ancient towers are found on the southeastern side of Exambela, a small village located a kilometer east of Apollonia. The record of these ruins was first reported by traveler Ludwig Ross in 1837 during his four-day trip to Sifnos. The tower was built in the 5th century BC, as part of the islanders’ effort to better fortify and defend Sifnos against pirate attacks.

The tower is round and features a black exterior. Professor Iakovos Dragatsis took great interest in studying these towers, particularly the Black Tower of Exambela. Used as a watchtower to protect the area from enemies, it stands in good condition compared to the other towers of the island, which are almost completely ruined.
