The Monastery of Panagia Vryssiani (or Vryssis) is located 2 km south of Apollonia. Distinguished for being the biggest monastery on the island, it was established in the 17th century in dedication to the Birth of the Virgin Mary. The monastery was designed following traditional Cycladic architecture, with a striking white exterior and blue accents.
Inside, visitors can see the main katholikon, which is interestingly older than the monastery itself. The beautiful, wood-carved iconostasis housed in the katholikon dates to 1750 and features valuable icons.
The monastery also hosts a small ecclesiastical museum. This museum exhibits old manuscripts, a New Testament from 1796, reliquaries, holy vessels, vestments of priests, and an embroidered cape made by the nun Kassiani.
