Windmills used to be an integral part of agrarian life in Sifnos during the past centuries.
Today, there are around 60 surviving windmills throughout the island, ten of which stand proudly in rows right at the entrance to Exambela and are commonly known as Arades. Another two adorn a hill overlooking Artemonas, and there are yet more in Kastro and other locations. Some of them are well-preserved, while others sadly lie in ruins.
There are also cases of windmills that have been restored and turned into tourist accommodations.
