Sifnos is home to a rich pottery history that dates back thousands of years, to the early Cycladic Period. Today, various traditional workshops are spread throughout the island that aim to keep the tradition alive, creating and selling high-quality ceramics. One such shop is the Apostolodis Ceramics Workshop located on the central road from Kamares to Apollonia.
Giannis Apostolidis, the owner of the workshop, first learned pottery from his grandfather, who practiced the art on the island in the early 20th century. Maintaining the family tradition, Giannis works every day, creating beautiful products for both functional and decorative purposes. Those visiting the workshop can see cooking utensils made of clay, all suitable for cooking in wood-fired and electric stoves. Various objects of everyday use are also on display, including plates, bowls, mugs, ashtrays, and platters, many boasting vibrant colors. Of note are the authentic cooking pots which resemble those used in ancient times.
Visitors are invited to watch the pottery-making process and learn more about the techniques and methods used in this centuries-old art. Afterward, they can browse through the extensive collection of colorful clay items and purchase the perfect souvenir from their trip to Sifnos.
