Naxos Tsikalario

General information

Tsikalario is a small village in the Tragea Valley, about 14 km southeast of Naxos Town and just around a kilometer from Halki. Tsikalario has a long pottery tradition, taking its name after a kind of ceramic cooking pot (tsikali). It lies next to the village of Chimaros and together they form the settlement of Zoodochos Pigi.

The surrounding landscapes of this scenic village are truly remarkable, with huge rock formations dotting the lush green hills. As you enter Tsikalario, you will see an old water spring next to the 6th-century Byzantine Church dedicated to Agios Stefanos. Also notable are the two Byzantine chapels of Virgin Mary Kastriani and Saint George.

The area is dominated by the Upper Castle (Apano Kastro) which overlooks the village. This historic structure was once the best fortified on the island and served as the residence of the Duke of Naxos in Medieval Times. It was also used by inhabitants seeking refuge from pirate attacks. Just below the hill lies the ancient Necropolis, a cemetery from the Geometric Period. The parish church of Zoodohos Pigi is another important landmark, residing between Tsikalario and Chimaros.
