ablutsauger 16 Oct 2015Wonderful coloursWe visited Vani from the sea, by boat.
It has a small beach, but I wouldn't count on swimming there.
However, the view is magnificent - the colours, rocks and their passages, shapes! Everything!
Even if you don't go on a boat trip around the island, I suggest you to take 4 x 4 and get there. It's worth it, because you can combine it with Kalogries beach(es), which is a wonderful place for itself. -
enricomedico 04 Jun 2011To Cape Vani and the old iron mineImportant notice:
1) you need a 4x4 car
2) you must drive slowly
The run (20 Km) conducts to Cape Vani, where there is the old iron and manganese mine, that has worked from 1890 to the 1928.
The landscape is hard, rocks and low vegetation, full of policrome stones.
From Vani you see, on the other side, Tripiti and Plaka, with the Kastro on the ridge of the hill.
You depart just before Emborio, turning to the left on the small road in beaten earth that brings to Agios Stilianos.
You ignore the two small bifurcations that you will find and after 1,9 km you will meet a small church. After the small church, no map marks the road, but it exists and you must follow it. After other 2,3 k. you meet the principal road in beaten earth of the region, that is ample due to the frequent use from the trailer trucks of the mine. There you will see an intersection with a sign that points out to the left the road for Triades-Ammudaraki-Agios Ioannis-Kleftiko and to the right that for Vani.
You turn to the right. The dirty road has an extraordinary sight on Rivari and Agios Nikolaos.
After 2,3 km from the intersection, a small road is found on the left, oblique in comparison to the principal road in beaten earth, you need to follow that. After having driven another km, you find another small intersection: the two roads reach the same place after 2 km, but that on the left is more easily practicable. You continue along the road in beaten earth (after 800 meters on the left there is the bifurcation that conducts next to the beach of Agathia).
You are near to the end and to the most impressive part of the run.
The landscape becomes harder and after 2,8 km, when you reach the old iron and manganese mine it becomes almost unreal, with the blue of the sea on the red and the black of the residues of the mining activity.
