Kythnos Loutra

General information

Loutra is one of the most important villages of Kythnos. It is placed on the northeast part of the island, approximately 5 km from Chora and 11 km from the port of Merichas. Its name means baths, in clear allusion to the thermal springs found on Loutra Beach, whose healing properties have been famous since ancient times.

Loutra has a decent number of restaurants and bars, known for their friendly vibe. The older visitors to Kythnos usually opt for Loutra, while the youngsters tend to prefer Merichas for their holidays.

Finally, Loutra is close to an important archaeological site; the Mesolithic settlement in the area of Maroulas, dating from 10,000 BC to 8,000 BC. The area lies in ruins today, but it would be worth a visit.

Note that Loutra is connected to Merichas and Chora via bus during the summer season.

More about Loutra

Although Loutra is a small village built around a natural bay, it is a popular resort that attracts lots of visitors seeking a cure or just rejuvenation in the thermal springs. An interesting historical fact is that the first queen of modern Greece, Amalia, the wife of King Otto, visited the thermal springs often while trying to get pregnant. As the springs were known for healing gynecological problems among others, the royal couple, who had been trying for a child for a long time, headed to Loutra full of hope. And, even though the queen never got pregnant, the two had Kythnos in their hearts and visited it whenever possible.
