Including a lot of feasting and drinking, the festivals of Kythnos are quite exciting. Once a year, celebrations and other events are held in honor of the Greek saints and locals revive old customs.
Religious feasts & festivals
The local celebrations of Kythnos are major events for the inhabitants, as they give them a chance to practice their religious beliefs. Feasts are also excellent occasions to enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of the island, dance till the early morning hours and eat delicious treats.
• Pentecost (movable date)
The descent of the Holy Spirit (and the Holy Trinity as a whole) is celebrated in Driopida and Chora.
• June 8th
The feast day of Agia Kalliopi is celebrated in Kanala, at the small church of Agia Kalliopi.
• June 30th
The feast day of Agioi Apostoloi (Holy Apostles) is celebrated in Driopida.
• July 20th
The feast day of Prophet Elias is celebrated in the central square of Chora. It is a special occasion where hundreds of people arrive to enjoy the local delights, music, and dancing.
• August 15th
This is the feast day of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and the day with the most festivities throughout the year. Since numerous churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary are found in Kythnos, many celebrations take place across the island, including the celebration of Panagia Kanala, Panagia Nikous and Panagia Stratilatissa.
• MUSIKYTHNOS Festival
MUSIKYTHNOS Festival was established in 2021 and has been taking place on the island every summer ever since. It is a project organized by people who love music and invited people to participate in workshops, attend concerts and lectures, and overall engage with the magical world of art!
