General information

Kolona Beach is the most beautiful beach in Kythnos. It is situated next to Fikiada Beach, opposite Apokrousi Beach and north of Merichas Port.

The beach owes its charm and name to its unique geomorphology; it comprises a narrow, 240-meter-long strip of sandy shore, connecting Kythnos with the islet of Agios Loukas. The sea laps onto both sides of the strip, resulting in two beaches with the same sandy shore. Also, Kolona is the Greek word for pillar, and, seeing the beach from above, you will notice that it indeed looks like one.

Except for thick golden sand, the beach also offers crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming surrounded by a one-of-a-kind setting, while its location ensures protection from strong winds. The latter feature is the reason Kolona attracts several yachts as well. Most of the shore is unorganized, yet the local beach bar offers some sunbeds.

The western tail of the beach leads to the rocky Vriokastro islet. Those who wish to hike the path will reach the quaint chapel of Agios Loukas, enjoy the amazing panoramic view, and take fantastic photos of the beach and bay.

Kolona lies approximately 6 km west of Chora and can be reached by a water taxi from Merichas, which is probably the best way to get there. If you own a private boat, it will be necessary to land directly on the sand, as there is no quay. It is possible to reach it by car, too, yet note that the road is pretty rough. Lastly, the beach can also be reached on foot, but the hike is long and takes around 1.5 hours from the port.

Soft sand and few trees for shade
Probably the most beautiful beach in Kythnos is Kolona. A long hike from Chora or a short motorbike ride, you choose the way. We had rented a bike for a couple of days to see the island and we spent both days in Kolona. A very lovely beach with few trees for shade and a tavern at one side. Soft sand, clean water and maybe a bit more yachts than expected. From the hill above Kolona, it looks like the sea is divided in two parts by a narrow strip of sand.
