Koufonisia Chora

General information

Sprawling around Koufonisia Port, the picturesque Chora is the capital and only settlement on the entire island. With its maze of narrow cobblestone alleys and its whitewashed houses, which are adorned with blooming bougainvilleas and blue-colored doors and windows, it is a wonderful example of Cycladic architecture, while a 19th-century windmill and the quaint blue-domed Church of Agios Georgios complete the picture-postcard setting!

Most of Koufonisia’s economic activity is, unsurprisingly, concentrated in Chora. Strolling around its streets, visitors will discover several small shops selling traditional products, as well as handmade items that can be purchased as souvenirs. Besides, Chora boasts the vast majority of the island’s accommodation options and a number of taverns and cafes, where travelers can relax sipping a refreshing drink or tasting local delicacies.

Ammos Beach, one of the island’s most popular swimming spots, conveniently stretches right in front of the settlement. At the same time, water taxis also depart from Chora, taking passengers to some of the loveliest beaches or the enchanting islet of Kato Koufonisi.
