Having been inhabited since prehistoric times, the now deserted Kato Koufonisi features a small archaeological site dating from the earliest phases of the Cycladic civilization.
Excavations have revealed an early Cycladic burial site, as well as the scant remnants of buildings from 3000 BC. Traces of Hellenistic and Roman constructions have been discovered too.
The picturesque chapel of Panagia, on the location of the abandoned settlement, also stands on top of some ancient ruins.
